COS Classroom Approach on Display at NAEYC 2023 Conference
Circle of Security International (COSI) will exhibit at the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) 2023 Conference, November 15 to 18 in Nashville, TN.
The conference is expected to attract more than 7,000 professionals in the early childhood education field to connect, collaborate, and learn together. COSI will be showcasing the Circle of Security Classroom Approach (COSC), which is designed to enhance teachers’ abilities to form secure relationships, and offers critical organizing principles from attachment theory to improve teacher confidence and competence in relationship building. This, in turn, fosters strong secure teacher-student relationships, and ultimately, student learning.
The COSC Approach is a two-tier approach. Tier 1 incorporates a vast body of research in attachment and developmental psychology to equip teachers with professional learning opportunities. Tier 2 focuses on the application of the learning into the classroom through supportive coaching.
“We’re looking forward to introducing the COSC Approach at the NAEYC 2023 Conference,” said Deidre Quinlan, a member of the COSI leadership team and lead developer of the COSC Approach, who will be attending the conference. “We’ve seen how the COSC Approach can make a difference in the lives of educators and children. We look forward to learning and growing with other exhibitors and attendees in our early childhood education community.”
As part of the exhibit, COSI will be sharing their new children's book, Someone to Be With. They will also be celebrating the "Teacher That Makes a Difference.” This phrase comes from a lesson in Tier 1 of the COSP Classroom approach, which cites evidence from more than a dozen studies that a secure relationship with a teacher leads to improved outcomes in the classroom.
Early childhood is a critical time for development and children need to develop a wide range of cognitive skills and social/emotional competencies to support their success. In other words, children learn to go to school so that later, they can go to school to learn. COSI encourages attendees to share the story of a teacher who made a difference in their lives with the hashtag #TeacherThatMakesADifference.
