Someone to Be With
Since interactions between children and adults are the primary mechanism for development and learning, children who have strong relationships with caring adults do better in learning environments. This children’s coloring book, with a helpful guide and script for families and educators, was written to support strong, first relationships for young children in early care settings.
Follow the journey of a young child to feel connected and supported in a classroom while away from their primary attachment figures. Everyone has a job and the Teacher, Parent, and Child all work together to create a predictable, consistent structure at the beginning and the end of each day.
"The concept for Someone to Be With emerged many years ago while we were first developing COS Classroom. As I watched parents leaving their children at Head Start, I saw that the children looked a bit lost as they negotiated the transition from their parent to their teacher’s care. Although it was more noticeable with new students, even students who had been in class the entire year showed signs of hesitation.
In response to this, we developed a daily script for teachers, parents, and children to use to negotiate these transitions. However, some teachers found it difficult to initiate the protocol. To make it easier, Deidre created a wonderful book to introduce and illustrate the importance of this daily practice. Knowing how preschoolers thrive on consistency and ritual, Someone to Be With is designed to help establish a routine for a seamless beginning to the child’s day at school and a smooth reunion with the parent at the end of the day. Once established, this approach becomes second nature for all."

Raising a Secure Child
Today's parents are constantly pressured to be perfect. But in striving to do everything right, we risk missing what children really need for lifelong emotional security. Now the simple, powerful "Circle of Security" parenting strategies that Kent Hoffman, Glen Cooper, and Bert Powell have taught thousands of families are available in self-help form for the first time. Readers learn how to protect and nurture babies through teens while fostering their independence, and what emotional needs a child may be expressing with difficult behavior. Vivid stories and unique practical tools offer insight into how our own upbringing affects our parenting style (and what to do about it). This book puts the keys to healthy attachment within everyone's reach - self understanding, flexibility, and the willingness to make and learn from mistakes.
"Outstanding in every respect - beautifully written, scientifically sound, loaded with excellent examples, and full of deep wisdom."— Phillip R. Shaver, PhD

The Circle of Security Intervention
Presenting both a theoretical foundation and proven strategies for helping caregivers become more attuned and responsive to their young children's emotional needs (ages 0-5), this is the first comprehensive presentation of the Circle of Security (COS) intervention. The book lucidly explains the conceptual underpinnings of COS and demonstrates the innovative attachment-based assessment and intervention strategies in rich clinical detail, including three chapter-length case examples. Reproducible forms and handouts can be downloaded and printed in a convenient 8½" x 11" size. COS is an effective research-based program that has been implemented throughout the world with children and parents experiencing attachment difficulties.
"Brilliant, creative, and transformative are words that don't fully capture the true power of this approach...Soak in the wisdom of these masters and you'll be forever grateful. I certainly am."
— Daniel J. Siegel, MD
"In my view, the Circle of Security (COS) is an approach that has changed the game. Derived from attachment research and Masterson's object relations theory, this intervention translates attachment research more meaningfully and more directly than anything we have seen before."
