Shark Music and the Space Between: From Unconscious Fear to Conscious Choice

Every person carries background “noise” shaped long before becoming a caregiver—often outside awareness, yet influencing present-moment interactions. In Circle of Security, we call this Shark Music: unconscious fear rooted in early attachment experiences.

Join Deidre Quinlan, experienced clinician and COSI Leadership Team, as she shares with us how to apply the relational framework RAR—Relationship, Affect, and Reflection—to create a holding environment where caregivers feel safe enough, even in discomfort, to stay, look, and begin to wonder if something different is possible.

The timing of this workshop will work best for those in Region B, C and D time zones, but everyone is welcome. If this date/time doesn't work for you, more workshops dates and times will be announced soon. This workshop will be recorded for internal COSI purposes only, and will not be available to review.

Description

Every person carries background “noise” shaped long before becoming a caregiver—often outside awareness, yet influencing present-moment interactions. In Circle of Security, we call this Shark Music: unconscious fear rooted in early attachment experiences.

As COS professionals, the goal is not to silence the music, but to skillfully be with caregivers as they begin to hear it—creating a felt sense of safety that opens space for choice. In this relational context, reflection can emerge. Reflection, grounded in a trusted relationship, becomes the pathway to new learning. Over time, new ways of relating become imaginable, practiced, and integrated into new internal working models.

In this 60-minute workshop, we will learn how to apply the relational framework RAR—Relationship, Affect, and Reflection—to create a holding environment where caregivers feel safe enough, even in discomfort, to stay, look, and begin to wonder if something different is possible.
