Since interactions between children and adults are the primary mechanism for development and learning, children who have strong relationships with caring adults do better in learning environments. This children’s coloring book, with a helpful guide and script for families and educators, was written to support strong, first relationships for young children in early care settings.

Follow the journey of a young child to feel connected and supported in a classroom while away from their primary attachment figures. Everyone has a job and the Teacher, Parent, and Child all work together to create a predictable, consistent structure at the beginning and the end of each day.

As part of the second generation of COSI leadership, Deidre is passionate about finding ways to bring the Circle of Security model to early care settings. As a mother, she is deeply grateful to the early care providers who partnered with her in the early care of her three children. As a clinician, Deidre has worked with educators both as an early childhood mental health consultant and an early care center director. With COSI, Deidre is focused on finding ways to ensure that children have an opportunity to achieve appropriate health and developmental outcomes, school readiness, and ultimate school success. To that end, she firmly believes that early care professionals need access to a systematized approach to enhancing relationships with the children in their care.

For many years, Deidre has partnered with the co-originators of the Circle of Security to develop and manualize what is today called the COS Classroom Approach. With this approach, the pragmatics of moving attachment theory to practice is unfolding. In particular, this book looks at the importance of building relationships between parents, early care providers, and the children. So often children at separation are offered reassurance that their caregiver will return. This book addresses a vital concern that’s on the mind of all children, "While my caregiver is away, who will be with me?"

oday's parents are constantly pressured to be perfect. But in striving to do everything right, we risk missing what children really need for lifelong emotional security. Now the simple, powerful "Circle of Security" parenting strategies that Kent Hoffman, Glen Cooper, and Bert Powell have taught thousands of families are available in self-help form for the first time. Readers learn how to protect and nurture babies through teens while fostering their independence, and what emotional needs a child may be expressing with difficult behavior. Vivid stories and unique practical tools offer insight into how our own upbringing affects our parenting style (and what to do about it). This book puts the keys to healthy attachment within everyone's reach - self understanding, flexibility, and the willingness to make and learn from mistakes.

"Outstanding in every respect - beautifully written, scientifically sound, loaded with excellent examples, and full of deep wisdom."

— Phillip R. Shaver, PhD

"Reading this book is an opportunity to learn about yourself—because, it turns out, knowing your own strengths and vulnerabilities is a vital key to parenting."

— Charles H. Zeanah, Jr., MD

Shallan Knowles talks about how Raising a Secure Child has given her "tools to focus on my relationship" with her toddler. Shallan says that Raising a Secure Child is different from most parenting books in its focus on the relationship rather than on strategies to manage behavior or other specific challenges of parenting. She notes: "I've had this book in my hands for maybe 2 months and I can already see a difference in the connection I have with [my son]."

resenting both a theoretical foundation and proven strategies for helping caregivers become more attuned and responsive to their young children's emotional needs (ages 0-5), this is the first comprehensive presentation of the Circle of Security (COS) intervention. The book lucidly explains the conceptual underpinnings of COS and demonstrates the innovative attachment-based assessment and intervention strategies in rich clinical detail, including three chapter-length case examples. Reproducible forms and handouts can be downloaded and printed in a convenient 8½" x 11" size. COS is an effective research-based program that has been implemented throughout the world with children and parents experiencing attachment difficulties.

"Brilliant, creative, and transformative are words that don't fully capture the true power of this approach...Soak in the wisdom of these masters and you'll be forever grateful. I certainly am."

— Daniel J. Siegel, MD

"In my view, the Circle of Security (COS) is an approach that has changed the game. Derived from attachment research and Masterson's object relations theory, this intervention translates attachment research more meaningfully and more directly than anything we have seen before."

— Charles H. Zeanah, MD
